The product
Sulfuric Acid
Sulphuric acid is a strong mineral acid. It is liquid at ambient temperature, oily, colourless and odourless. Its chemical formula is H2SO4
It is the most used base chemical in the industrial world.
The sulphuric acid produced by Nuova Solmine, as a result of its high grade of purity, can be used in multiple industrial processes in markets both at home and abroad.
SOLBAT, another company in the Sol.mar Group produces and markets diluted sulphuric acid in various concentrations.
Diluted sulphuric acid, too, has many applications in industry: accumulator manufacturing, steel mills, the pharmaceutical industry, and those of food and fertilizers.
Nuova Solmine
History
In 1962 the industrial complex of Casone di Scarlino was built by the Montecatini Edison Company as verticality for the business of pyrite extraction from the Colline Metallifere. The transformation and integral use of the mineral was carried out at the plant merged with Solmine in 1972, producing sulphuric acid, ferrous oxide pellets and energy. In 1989 So.ri.S SpA was formed in Serravalle Scrivia in the province of Alessandria and is the only plant in Italy working in the sector of the heat treatment of solid and liquid waste containing sulphur and in the regeneration of spent sulphuric acid. n 1996 Sol Mar SpA was formed in order to participate in the acquisition tender for the Eni Group company Nuova Solmine. Nuova Solmine came under the complete control of Sol Mar SpA as the result of a management buy-out. In 2005 Nuova Solmine SpA acquired the complete control of So.Ri.S SpA.
Distribution
Market
Nuova Solmine’s market involves both Italy, where the company is a leader, and abroad, with particular reference to the Mediterranean area (France, Spain Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Israel, Turkey, Greece), but not only. A substantial part of sales, in fact, is directed to Portugal and Central and South America. The most important and closest foreign market, however, is Spain, particularly the Barcelona area, where starting in 2012 Nuova Solmine established its own subsidiary company, Nuova Solmine Iberia. Since 2020, Nuova Solmine has also been present in the south of France through Nuova Solmine France.
Nuova Solmine distributes its products by trucks or by making use of major facilities; in particular, the Scarlino plant is connected by pipeline to a pier at sea dedicated to tanker loading, and it has also a rail connection that allows it to ship acid and oleum to its customers by train, through the use of special rail tankers. In 2013, Nuova Solmine invested in a logistics platform at the port of Vasto (CH) from which it supplies its customers in central and southern Italy.
